Majok and Nyibol have five children and have been in the homeownership program for the last few years. Over that time, they have completed their partnership requirements, saved for closing costs, and are ready to close on their new home, opening a future full of possibilities.
With the cost of a first-time home in Spokane County averaging $400K, Majok and Nyibol could not afford a house that would accommodate their family size. With the Habitat Homeownership Program, homes are built and sold at cost, with a monthly mortgage payment of no more than 30% of a qualified buyer’s income. This makes the American Dream accessible to qualified individuals and families earning below 80% of the area’s median income.
Majok and Nyibol’s home is one of 16 units in Phase II of the Highland Village Development and was built in collaboration with the City of Airway Heights, Spokane County, Habitat for Humanity-Spokane, Community Frameworks, and Greenstone Homes.
Habitat for Humanity invites the public to join the celebration and welcome the new homeowners as they accept the keys to their safe, decent, energy-efficient, affordable home.
“Habitat Home Dedications are an extraordinary experience, especially as we prepare for the holidays,” shared Michelle Girardot, CEO of Habitat for Humanity-Spokane. “The cost of a home is out of reach for far too many, but the generosity of the Spokane County community makes Habitat for Humanity’s mission possible, and we are beyond thrilled for Majok and Nyibol’s family as they start their new future,” Girardot continued.

With a little help, we all have the potential to stand on our own.
Habitat for Humanity is a partnership — Habitat homeowners receive financial education, help build their houses, and pay an affordable mortgage.
Families that partner with Habitat-Spokane work hard to build a better life for themselves – and their children. Partner families earn 250 partnership hours helping build their homes and taking financial education classes (provided for free by Habitat), where they learn how to improve their credit, pay off debt, and save money. After completing all the program requirements, they purchase their Habitat home at an affordable price – mortgage payments are never more than 30% of their income.
ABOUT HABITAT FOR HUMANITY-SPOKANE:
Driven by the vision that everyone needs a decent place to live, Habitat for Humanity-Spokane began in 1987. Habitat-Spokane aims to put God’s love into action and brings people together to build homes, communities, and hope. Families and individuals in need of a hand-up partner with Habitat for Humanity to build or improve a place they can call home. Future Habitat homeowners work alongside volunteers to earn partnership hours, attend homebuyer workshops, save for closing costs, and pay an affordable mortgage. Habitat-Spokane is an equal opportunity housing provider.
Through financial support, volunteering, or adding a voice to support affordable housing, everyone can help families achieve the strength, stability, and self-reliance they need to build better lives for themselves.
