It’s the busiest time of year for home builders and contractors, but that hasn’t stopped nearly three dozen local companies and industry professionals from stepping up to support Habitat for Humanity-Spokane’s Home Builders Blitz.
Yesterday, July 8, many of those supporters were in attendance for a sneak peek at the progress and tour of the Habitat home being built in the Hope Meadows community in Deer Park.
Viking Homes is the lead builder for Habitat-Spokane’s Home Builders Blitz, with critical support from Spokane Home Builders Association (SHBA). To date, more than 20 local contractors and subcontractors for Viking Homes and SHBA members have committed to donate labor, materials and money.
Chris Dixon, owner of Gold Seal Mechanical and member of SHBA, is supporting the project by providing labor and materials at no cost to Habitat-Spokane. He was onsite yesterday with his crew installing rough plumbing.
“We have been in partnership with Habitat-Spokane for more than 30 years,” said Dixon. “The stability of a home provides better opportunities for families, plus there is nothing like being a part of changing someone’s life.”
Future Habitat homeowner Janessa was also in attendance. With tears in her eyes and a smile on her face, she stood in what will be soon be her finished kitchen.
“I am so grateful,” Janessa said while touring her home in progress. “I just keep telling my two older girls they will have their own space in just a few short months.”
Janessa is currently living in a small two-bedroom apartment with her four children. She partnered with Habitat just over two years ago and is working hard toward completing the last of her 500 required hours of sweat equity. Once the home is complete, Janessa will purchase the home an begin paying an affordable mortgage no more than 30% of her income.
“This accelerated home-build would not be possible without Viking Homes stepping up to partner with Habitat-Spokane.” said Lydia Duffy, Chief Development Officer at Habitat-Spokane. “We are grateful for the partnerships that are changing the lives of hard-working families in need of a hand up.”
Janessa is most looking forward to living in a safe and stable neighborhood where she can put down roots with her family.
“Knowing we won’t have to keep moving and that my kids will attend a good school means everything,” she added.
“In the midst of a busy building season and a shortage in labor workforce, we are more grateful than ever to SHBA and their membership for their passion for homeownership and affordable housing in our community,” said Duffy.
