Kick Off Ceremony Monday, June 3, 8:30AM
Dedication of 2 Homes, June 14, 12:00PM

SPOKANE, Wash. – Habitat-Spokane’s annual Blitz Build kicks off Monday, June 3 with an opening ceremony beginning at 8:30 a.m. at the Blitz Build site located at the 1000 block of South Margaret Street in Deer Park, WA 99006.

Habitat-Spokane has been “Blitz Building” for eighteen years. On average, approximately 1000 supporters throughout the community come together in support of Blitz Build each year. Volunteers, sponsor groups, businesses and community leaders who are willing to partner with Habitat for Humanity-Spokane and support affordable homeownership work side-by-side with current and future Habitat homeowners to build decent, affordable homes for hard-working families in need.

“Blitz Build is an exciting time as volunteers, donors and future homeowners come together to build homes, communities and hope,” said Michelle Girardot, CEO for Habitat for Humanity-Spokane. “Spokane is a generous community, and it’s incredible to see so many people and organizations come together to build something greater than themselves.”

While Habitat-Spokane builds homes year-round, Blitz Build is an accelerated construction effort. For Habitat, it’s also an opportunity to raise more awareness of the affordable housing crisis our community is facing.

The Community Indicators Initiative of Spokane website says roughly 45% of Spokane County renters were paying more than 50% of their income on rent in 2017. Very few affordable housing options are available for low-income families. Habitat’s Homeownership Program provides a solution to that crisis.

Families who partner with Habitat complete 500 hours of sweat equity building their home and the homes of their future neighbors. They purchase their home and pay an affordable mortgage of no more than 30% of their income. Each family is invested in creating better outcomes for themselves.

Blitz Build efforts will focus on finishing and exterior work for two homes. Habitat-Spokane will also dedicate two recently completed homes at 12:00 p.m. on Friday, June 14th at the same location.

“Few things make me happier than dedication day for a new Habitat homeowner,” said Girardot. “Every time I witness someone receive the keys to their new home, I know those keys will open the door to a better future for themselves and their families.”

Sponsorship for Blitz Build 2019 is generously provided by: Banner Bank, SRM Development, Washington Trust Bank, Travelers Insurance, Reliance, Umpqua Bank, Itron, and Central Pre-Mix.
