PATH TO HOMEOWNERSHIP

Learn more about Habitat homeownership

Every applicant’s path is different, and the process can take time. Our team is available to help prospective applicants understand the program, requirements and next steps.

What does partnership look like?

Becoming a Habitat homeowner is a partnership. Qualified applicants work alongside Habitat throughout the process, which will include completing homeownership education, preparing for mortgage qualification, and participating in other requirements connected to the program.

HOMEOWNER SERVICES

Your Path to Homeownership

Whether you’re ready to explore buying a home or just beginning to understand your options, Habitat Spokane can help you take your next step.

Our Community Education Program provides learning and support at your own pace, while our Homeownership Program offers opportunities to purchase an affordable Habitat home.

Connect With Our Team

Start by contacting us by phone, email or through our website. You can also meet our team at community events and outreach opportunities.

Our Homeowner Services team will follow up, add you to our home purchase notification list and help you register for a Program Information Class.

Attend a Program Information Class

Learn how our programs work, what support is available and how to move forward based on your goals. After the class, you’ll complete a short survey, connect with a case manager and be able to register for additional classes.

You do not need to qualify for the Homeownership Program to participate in community education.

Learn and Prepare at Your Own Pace

Attend classes that fit your schedule and arrange meetings with your Homeowner Engagement Specialist as needed. If purchasing a Habitat home is your long-term goal, you can also begin volunteering and working toward program requirements.

Your path may lead to a Habitat home, a home purchased on the open market or a stronger understanding of your finances. You can participate as much as you need, take a break and return when you’re ready.

Participating in community education or volunteering does not guarantee qualification for a Habitat home.

Explore Available Homes

When Habitat is seeking applicants for available homes, households on our home purchase notification list will receive an announcement with details and images.

Review the available homes and purchase timeline to decide whether the opportunity fits your household. If you need more time to prepare or the homes aren’t a good fit, you can wait and continue receiving future announcements.

You can remain on the notification list even while taking a break from community education.

Apply for a Home Purchase Opportunity

If you’re interested in an available home, let our team know. We’ll provide the application, explain the required paperwork and share the submission deadline. You’ll have several weeks to complete and submit your application.

Our Homeownership Program evaluates applicants using three criteria: need, willingness to partner and ability to repay an affordable mortgage.

Applications will be reviewed for eligibility, and buyers will be selected from qualified applicants through a lottery process.

Meeting the qualifications does not guarantee selection for a home.

Complete the Homeowner Program

If selected, you’ll become a Future Homeowner and enter the Homeowner Program with a particular home assigned to you.

Over approximately six to eight months, you’ll complete any remaining required classes and volunteer hours, address outstanding financial preparation needs and work with Habitat staff and your lender toward purchasing your home.

Purchase Your Habitat Home

The final six to eight weeks are generally dedicated to the closing process with Habitat staff and your lender. Once the purchase is complete, you’ll begin your next chapter as a Habitat homeowner.
